The Hebridean Sheep Society exists to promote Hebridean sheep as an economical breed with qualities of importance to today's livestock industry (particularly extensive sheep farming) and many types of ecological management task to promote biodiversity. The Society is the registration authority for the breed within the UK and is affiliated to the National Sheep Association.
Buyer Beware: If you are considering buying or loaning Hebridean sheep, here are few things to bear in mind!
• Registered stock should always have a metal ear tag with letters “HEB.SS” on one side, with an individual registration number, e.g. 0123 plus year of birth e.g. /07 for 2007, on the other side. The complete ear tag would read HEB.SS 0123/07
• Registered stock will also have a yellow A4 registration document, and both the registration number and ear-tag numbers on this should agree with the actual tags in the animal’s ears.
• You must be handed the tear-off portion at the bottom of this document when purchasing your sheep.
• Hebridean sheep sold as “pure bred” but without the registration document or registration ear-tag are probably not registered and probably cannot be registered retrospectively.
• Hebridean sheep can only be registered by the “breeder” and only if they are the progeny of fully registered parents.
